Acute GP Team
BrisDoc’s GP Support Unit at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and the GP Support Team in Southmead Hospital were set up to find alternative ways to manage patients without necessarily having to admit them into hospital.
Both services take referrals for medical admissions and have a good understanding of the community alternatives that may be more appropriate than a hospital admission, and they will advise your GP accordingly.
Patients in Southmead Hospital Emergency Department may be seen by one of our Advanced Nurse Practitioners who will discuss with you the most appropriate options to management your problem.
You can only be referred to these services by your own GP. If there is a follow-up appointment required (for example looking up test results) after you have been seen in either service this will usually also be with your own GP.
The service in GPSU is open from 08:00 to 20:00 Monday to Friday, and is located within the Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) on level 4 (Queen’s Building) of the BRI. Use the main lifts / stairs to level 4, and follow signs for Ambulatory Care Unit (opposite the Queen’s day unit). There is off road parking close to the BRI or in the Trenchard Street NCP car park. Parking and drop off is often easier if you bring someone with you, and we would recommend that you are accompanied on your visit to GPSU.
The service in GPST is open weekdays from 08:00 to 19:00 and is located within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) in the newly developed Brunel building. Make your way to the Emergency Department and follow signs to Gate 31 (AMU) Beds 1 – 32.
