Charlotte Keel Medical Practice held an event this week to celebrate people who have achieved Remission of their Type 2 Diabetes through weight loss and healthy lifestyle changes. Eleven patients at the practice who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and have made healthy lifestyle changes were invited in for the celebration. For these patients the hard work has paid off and their test results have come in below the diabetes range without the need for medication.
Mr Shahid Awan said: “Your own self is more important than anything else… I have stopped sugary cakes, I go to the gym regularly, I have lost between 2 and 3 stone and now my diabetes is controlled without medication.”
Another patient at the practice Mrs Aneacia Davies commented: “I have made some small changes like using smaller dinner plates, stopping white bread, not having sugary fizzy drinks. My portions are smaller and I have lost weight.”
Liz Turner – Lead Practice Nurse at the Charlotte Keel Medical Practice: “This is a great achievement and there is a powerful message here for everyone with diabetes, and also for anyone who finds their weight is creeping up and knows they have type 2 diabetes in the family, or thinks they may be at risk. It’s not rocket science moving towards a healthy weight by eating more healthily, and keeping active will help to improve many health outcomes including helping people to avoid type 2 diabetes.”
Mr Shahid Awan works as a taxi driver and added “often at the end of a night shift taxi drivers eat junk food and then go home to bed – I think that food is poison”
John Moore – Practice Nurse at the Charlotte Keel Medical Practice and Clinical Lead for Diabetes for the local area Clinical Commissioning Group (BNSSG CCG) says: “8 out of 10 people who develop Type 2 Diabetes are carrying extra weight (particularly around the middle) and for many of these people weight loss can dramatically transform their diabetes. Clearly for most people with Type 2 Diabetes and for everyone with Type 1 diabetes (which is not caused by lifestyle but is an auto immune disease) lifestyle change alone will not manage their diabetes. Healthy lifestyle is a vital part of diabetes care for anyone with diabetes. It is great to celebrate the achievement of these patients with Type 2 diabetes who have taken the driving seat in managing their condition and are achieving excellent management without the need for medication.”
